Romanians charged with hacking DC surveillance cams in ransomeware scheme

"This case was of the highest priority due to its impact on the Secret Service's protective mission and its potential effect on the security plan for the 2017 Presidential Inauguration", U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu said in a press release announcing the charges. Two Romanians, who law enforcement officials describe as part of a bigger extortionist hacking group, are being charged in federal court with fraud and computer crimes. 

The two are the 25 year old Mihai Alexandru Isvanca and 28 year old Eveline Cismaru. The U.S. charges, filed under seal on December 11, were first reported by CNN. Prosecutors plan to seek extradition for the pair soon.

If convicted they could each likely see 20 years in prison.

They now extradition to the United States on charges of wire fraud and attacking protected computers, according to court filings from the Department of Justice.

DC police first noticed a malfunction in the cameras on January 12.
