Chicago man pleads guilty to $300,000 Treasury check fraud in eastern Iowa
KIMT Chicago
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A Chicago man pleaded guilty to running a fraudulent check scheme that targeted banks across Eastern Iowa in 2023.
Tyrone Terrell Harris, 34, was convicted of five counts of theft of government property, five counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of money laundering and one count of money laundering conspiracy. Harris admitted his role in the scheme during his plea hearing in federal court.
Evidence showed Harris gave fake U.S. Treasury checks to people working with him, who then took the checks to banks in Eastern Iowa. The people had fake driver's licenses with the names of real victims whose checks had been stolen, along with their Social Security numbers and birth dates.
